The K2 assault rifle, adopted by the Republic of Korea Army in 1985, is the first mainstay assault rifle developed independently by South Korea. While the operation system and receiver shape follow the M16 series, it employs a long-stroke gas piston mechanism similar to the AK-47 for its internal firing mechanism. It ensures high reliability even in harsh environments such as mud, sand, and cold weather. Additionally, unlike the M16 series, it does not require a buffer tube, allowing for a foldable stock design, which is a significant feature in its appearance. Since around 2010, it has been updated to the modernized K2C1, but it served as the primary firearm for South Korea's national defense from 1980 to 2010.
